Supervising Staff Mentor Group
This informal group will provide an opportunity for any staff who are supervising students to connect across multiple sites with any of their issues relating to student support and education through sharing their experiences & innovative ideas. It can be a chance to debrief, seek out tips and tricks in facilitation, how to set up a positive learning environment, how to provide feedback (to both students and staff) or simply to share information about a particular project.
Timing will be guided by the membership, we want to be as flexible as we can to support you the supervisor as well as work in with current training and support that is available within our region. Periodic VC or Skype sessions will be facilitated by UoM staff (and others) on particular themes as requested by the group.
The goal is to combat some of the professional isolation we can sometimes feel, particularly if we are in a smaller setting without an established education unit for support.
This week we will invite Murray Bardwell our Education Coordinator to facilitate a discussion around supporting students and some of the challenges we as educators face.
Murray has a background in nursing and has worked in a variety of clinical and education settings. He is a credentialed Mental Health Nurse and a member of the Australian College of Mental Health Nurses. He is an experienced therapist and counsellor with an approach informed by Neuropsychology and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. His CV also lists roles as nursing academic and educator as well as both course and clinical coordination in the higher education sector. Having worked alongside students in acute care and mental health settings he has insight into the challenges and rewards experienced by those educators and clinicians who support them.
His current roles are as Education Coordinator with the Department of Rural Health University of Melbourne and continues to provide counselling services in private practice.
