The city of Wangaratta is located in Victoria’s north-east between Benalla and Wodonga, on the road to Sydney. The Ovens River runs through the town.

Wangaratta’s first people were the Pangerang people. The name Wangaratta is actually derived from their indigenous language – ‘Wonga’ meaning resting place of the long neck wonga (cormorant) and ‘ratta’ meaning meeting place of the river.

The first settler arrived in the area in 1838. By the mid 1850’s the town had grown due to the area’s gold rush, leading to the building of many historic buildings, some of which still stand today. Steam trains connecting the town in the early 1870’s also led to an increase in population.

These days, Wangaratta’s main industries are farming, manufacture and tourism. The town is a central hub to the surrounding food and wine regions of Glenrowan, King Valley and Beechworth.  The Milawa Gourmet region is also an attraction with producers of specialty cheese, bread and fresh produce. There are also National Parks, wetlands and waterways close by, popular with cyclists, nature lovers, walkers, campers and bird watchers.
