Donald is situated on the Sunraysia Highway (B220) between St Arnaud and Birchip, 39 km from St Arnaud, and is in a region known for wheat, barley and lamb production. The township itself is surrounded by a number of lakes, including Lake Buloke, 8km north of the town, which is renowned for its local birdlife.

Local and national artists have painted murals on a number of local buildings, which are quite striking (see below).
