
Eligibility Criteria
Am I Eligible?
Domestic Student
Students must be Australian citizens, New Zealand citizens or permanent residents of Australia (including holders of an Australian permanent visa) or have refugee status.
Enrolment Status
Students must be enrolled in a nationally recognised nursing, allied health or other health science undergraduate or postgraduate degree with a recognised Australian education provider.
Supported Locations
Students must be completing a placement in our rural footprint. To check if your placement location is eligible for support, see our rural footprint.
Placement Length
Placements must be a minimum of two weeks full time (and no less than four days per week).
Full Criteria
Students must meet the below-listed criteria when applying for our Rural Placement Support Payment or subsidised accommodation. The parameters around the eligibility criteria are set by the Australian Government as part of the University Department of Rural health funding agreement.
- Be an Australian citizen, New Zealand citizen, permanent resident of Australia (including holder of an Australian permanent visa) or have refugee status (evidence must be provided)
- Be undertaking a placement that has been applied for, organised and confirmed by the relevant registered Australian university (evidence must be provided)
- Be undertaking a placement that is a minimum of 2 weeks full time (and no less than 4 or more days per week)
- Be completing a placement within the Going Rural Health footprint (See GRH Footprint)
Submit an application before, during, or up to 30 days after the completion date of the placement. Applications submitted more than 30 days after the placement completion date will not be accepted - At the completion of placement, finalise their application through the application portal (accessible here: [Rural Living Portal] to confirm that they have completed their placement. Students do this by providing relevant
documentation showing placement completion. This must be completed within 30 days of the placement completion date. Failure to do so will result in students’ application being withdrawn, and support will be revoked. (Students who have been accepted for subsidised accommodation
will be invoiced for the full rate at $200 per week of stay, if they fail to comply) - Provide further documentation to support their initial application if requested, or are followed up to provide correct documentation. Our team will follow up students for 30 days from the initial request for further documentation date. If no response is received within this timeframe, the application will be considered withdrawn

Other Scholarships on offer
- NAFEA Equity Rural Placement Scholarship – Equity Rural Placement Scholarships – NAFEA
- Speech Pathology and Occupational Therapy Student Grant Program – Up to 436 grants of $15,000 each, are available from 2024 to 2026 inclusive.
- 2025 WIL Australia Student Scholarships - A small number of scholarships of $1,500 provide financial support for students undertaking a WIL placement in Australia as part of their 2025/2026 university studies.
- Rural clinical placement scheme -The Australian Society of Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy (ASMIRT) offers $1,000 Rural Clinical Placement Scheme grants to student members. Two grants are available per university, per year, to support travel and accommodation costs for students undertaking rural clinical placements in Medical Imaging, Radiation Therapy, or Nuclear Medicine.
