Aquamoves

Aquamoves is a health and leisure centre provided by Greater Shepparton City Council located next to the Shepparton Lake. Aquamoves provides aquatic, group fitness and gym services.

Goulburn Valley Physiotherapy Centre has been providing Physiotherapy services to Shepparton and surrounds for over thirty years. More recently the service has established a relationship with Aquamoves to enhance the facility’s ability to service the health needs of the community.

Location

This placement is based in Shepparton, Victoria.

Placement details

The placement involves students engaging in a project based at Aquamoves two days a week and will also attend two clinical days a week at Goulburn Valley Physiotherapy Centre. Previous projects have focused on developing injury prevention programs and men’s health groups. Supervision will be structured around clinical skills, student learning experiences and goal setting for placement outcomes.

This placement opportunity typically is appropriate for 4th year physiotherapy students (or postgraduate equivalent) due to the placement involving external long-arm supervision and the students requiring a level of independence to complete the placement confidently and safely.

Supervision

We currently partner with health professionals to provide external long-arm supervision to the students on placement. We work with host site contacts and the external supervisor to set up and coordinate the placement with partnered host universities.

A valid Working With Children’s Check (WWCC) is required for this placement.

Barmah Kindergarten and Occasional Care

Barmah Kindergarten and Occasional Care operates a kindergarten (3 and 4 year old) and occasional care, five days a fortnight. Session times are 9.15am-3.15pm. Barmah is on the banks of the Murray River, with Cummeragunja across the river. The kindergarten reported that from Barmah it is difficult to access allied health, so having access to students is really valued by the service.

Barmah Kindergarten and Occasional Care joined in partnership with Going Rural Health in 2022 to set up occupational therapy student placements. The current identified needs of the kindergarten were to work with the children to build on their emotional regulation and social skills.

Location

This placement is located in Barmah, Victoria.

Placement details

The placement involves the students attending Barmah Kindergarten and Occasional Care three days during the week, and attending another site during the remainder of the week. The students initially engage in classroom observation and staff consultations to understand the needs of the kinder and children. The occupational therapy students have been involved in providing group-based intervention to children with written consent provided by the child’s family, or through providing staff education and resources to promote sustainability of the program long-term.

The university students work with 3 and 4 year old kindergarten children, and with kindergarten staff to provide education and resources to promote consistency of strategies after the student placements have concluded.

This placement opportunity typically is appropriate for 3rd and 4th year occupational therapy students (or postgraduate equivalent) due to the placement involving external long-arm supervision and the students requiring a level of independence to complete the placement confidently and safely.

Student placement blocks would need to align with Victorian school term dates.

Supervision

Our staff currently provide external long-arm supervision to the students on placement. We also work with the kindergarten teacher to set up and coordinate the placement with partnered host universities.

Mooroopna Primary School

Mooroopna Primary School is a school with approximately 250 students enrolled, located in Mooroopna, northern Victoria. Mooroopna Primary School have a focus on student wellbeing and have continually partnered with Going Rural Health to provide multidisciplinary and interprofessional allied health placement opportunities.

Mooroopna Primary School hosted their first speech pathology placement in 2021 and has continued to grow placements across various allied health disciplines.

The placement involves the students attending Mooroopna Primary School (and possibly another school or kindergarten within Mooroopna during the remainder of the week). The students initially engage in classroom observation and staff consultations to understand the needs of the school and students. The speech pathology students work with the school students in the classroom, in small groups and individually to support their speech, oral language and literacy skills. They also provide assessments and screening as required. The occupational therapy students have been involved in providing group-based intervention to school students or through providing staff education and resources to promote sustainability of the program long-term. Audiology students have previously provided screenings to foundation students, and education to students and staff.

This placement opportunity typically is appropriate for 3rd and 4th year students (or post-graduate equivalent) due to the placement involving long-arm supervision and the students requiring a level of independence to complete the placement confidently and safely.

Mooroopna North Primary School

Mooroopna North Primary School is a small rural school located in Mooroopna, northern Victoria. Mooroopna North Primary School have a focus on student wellbeing and have continually partnered with Going Rural Health to provide multidisciplinary and interprofessional allied health placement opportunities.

Mooroopna North Primary School hosted their first speech pathology placement in 2021 and has continued to grow placements across various allied health disciplines. Mooroopna North Primary School has become known within the community for providing a supportive environment to students with additional needs and as such has a high percentage of students with diagnosis such as ASD, ADHD, ID, Tourette’s, Dyslexia, dysgraphia, dyscalculia, PTSD, ODD. The school provides a whole school case management approach to each student to ensure their strengths are celebrated and their needs are understood and met by all stakeholders. Placement students have the opportunity to work one on one and in small groups with students, support students within the classrooms, attend student support group and professionals meetings, provide professional learning to staff and become a valued member of the staff team while completing their placement.

NCN Health

NCN Health is health service that involved the merging of Numurkah, Cobram and Nathalia health services. Numurkah is approximately 30 minutes north of University of Melbourne’s Shepparton campus.

NCN Health joined in partnership with Going Rural Health in 2022 to set up service-learning occupational therapy placements in local schools and kindergartens in the hopes of providing a paediatric service that is currently lacking within the local public health service.

Location

This placement is located in Numurkah, Victoria

Placement details

Students have attended NCN Health Numurkah campus part time in combination with attending local kindergartens and schools on the remaining days of the week. Students have had the opportunity to attend group health education sessions with NCN Health staff, engage in interprofessional practice and attend local community events that NCN Health have also supported and attended.

Supervision

Our staff currently provide external long-arm supervision to the students on placement in conjunction with the allied health educator and occupational therapist at NCN Health Numurkah. We also work with school staff to set up and coordinate the placement with partnered host universities.

Strathmerton Primary School

Located close to the Victorian and New South Wales border, 249km north of Melbourne and 56km north of Shepparton. Strathmerton Primary School services students from Strathmerton and surrounding areas of Yarroweyah and Bearii. The school recognises that education is a fundamental right, so its vision is to ensure that all students experience high quality teaching and learning, that prepares them to be active, engaged and responsible citizens of the local and global community. Further, we believe that students can only reach their full educational potential when they are happy, healthy and safe, and when there is a positive school culture to support them. The school’s overall Socio Economic profile is in the High range, as determined by the Student Family Occupation and Education index (SFOE), so our allocated Equity funding is directed to providing additional support to our most vulnerable students through aide support, speech therapy and School Chaplain. The school grounds are spacious with multiple areas to play, including a large oval, two synthetic courts and two playgrounds.
