Myrtleford

Myrtleford is situated on the scenic Great Alpine Road between Wangaratta and Bright. The town centre is set against the scenic backdrop of a forest mountain range.

Myrtleford was originally known as Myrtle Creek, and the area has a rich history of gold mining, and hops and tobacco growing. These days primary industries are timber harvesting, grape growing and winemaking, fruit and nut growing, and the dairy industry.

There are a number of attractions within the area. The Tobacco Co-Op illustrates the tobacco growing history of the region and boasts the landmark ‘Big Cigarette’. The Phoenix Tree is a large sculpture carved out of the trunk and roots of a huge River Red Gum. Lake Buffalo is a man-made lake south of Myrtleford, on the Buffalo River, and is the water supply of Wangaratta and farms in the area. It is popular for picnics, barbeques, and water sports.

The are also several bike and walking tracks nearby. Mount Buffalo National Park is also south of Myrtleford, accessed via the small town of Porepunkah.
