Violet Town

Violet Town is located just off the Hume Freeway 185 km north-east of Melbourne.

It is widely accepted that the origin of the town’s name came about when Major Thomas Mitchell travelled through the area, the first European to do so. Apparently he saw a profusion of wild violets and named the district Violet Ponds. When the government surveyed the settlement area, the first area surveyed in Victoria, they called it Violet Creek. The town’s name changed to Violet Town when the area expanded.

The area’s first people are the Yorta Yorta people. After European settlement the town was an important stopping point on the road between Melbourne and Sydney. Further expansion of the settlement occurred in the mid-1800’s with the discovery of gold in the north-east. Many historic buildings still remain in the town from that time.

Violet Town’s most recent claim to fame is that it was the childhood home of Ella and Jesse Hooper from the band Killing Heidi.
