Tatura

Tatura is a small town in the Goulburn Valley, 18km west of Shepparton and 167 km north of Melbourne. The town’s name is an Aboriginal word meaning ‘small lagoon’.

The main employment in Tatura is manufacturing, primarily in the dairy industry and large multinational corporations, such as Tatura Milk and Unilever.

During World War II Tatura was host to internment and prisoner of war camps. The first camp opened in 1940, and the last closed in January 1947. The National Archives of Australia maintain records of the camps’events and photos, and a war time museum at Tatura depicts this history. Ther is also a German War Cemetery.

Tatura also boasts Cussen Park, which is a natural wetland environment that hosts native birdlife and wildlife.

The town celebrates its agricultural excellence with The Tatura Show and International Dairy Week – which is the largest dairy show in the Southern Hemisphere.
