Kyabram

Kyabram is situated in the Goulburn Valley, 200 km north of Melbourne, 38km west of Shepparton. The area began as a sheep run with European settlement, and didn’t become a township until the mid 1870s.

There was an outcry in 1884 when officials tried to name the Post Office – and so the town – after a visiting American General that the townsfolk had barely even heard of. After much protest the Post Office was re-christened by the Government as ‘Kyabram’.

The first people of the area are the Bangerang people. The name of the town is thought to have been derived from an Aboriginal word ‘Kiambram’, meaning ‘thick forest’, as the area was originally thickly forested.

Kyabram today is a large producer of dairy and fruit. Its main tourist attraction is the Fauna Park, with Australian Fauna set in 55 hectares of open woodland, wetlands and lakes. The town is also within a short drive to the Goulburn, Campaspe and Murray Rivers.
